A container chassis is a skeletal semi-trailer built to carry an ISO shipping container and nothing else. It has no deck. It is a frame, axles, landing gear, a kingpin and four twist locks that engage the container’s corner castings. The container becomes the structure of the load.

You need one if you are moving containers regularly and you have lifting equipment at both ends. You do not need one for a single delivery to a site with no crane — that is a tilt deck job. Understanding which of those two situations you are in is most of the decision.

How a Chassis Actually Works

Every ISO container has eight corner castings — steel fittings welded permanently into the corners, standardized under ISO 1161. Each measures roughly 7 × 7 × 4.5 inches and carries an oval hole on its outer face. These are the only points on a container designed to take the full load path.

The chassis carries four twist locks positioned to match. A twist lock is a male pin that drops through the oval hole in the casting and is then rotated 90 degrees, at which point it physically cannot withdraw. Individual twist locks are typically rated at 20 to 25 tonnes tensile. Four of them hold a fully loaded 67,200 lb container against road forces without a single strap or chain.

That is the whole system, and it is why chassis are so efficient. No decking to carry weight, no tie-downs to throw, no load securement time. A driver backs under, drops the pins, turns them, and the container is secured in under a minute.

The parts you should know

  • Kingpin — couples to the tractor’s fifth wheel, same as any semi-trailer.
  • Main rails and bolsters — the longitudinal frame and the crossmembers that carry the twist locks.
  • Twist locks — four active, sometimes more on multi-position chassis. Check they rotate freely and that the handles latch.
  • Landing gear — cranks down so the chassis stands loaded when the tractor is disconnected.
  • Suspension — spring or air ride. Air ride costs more, rides better and is easier on cargo.
  • Slider / bogie — on many chassis the axle group slides fore and aft to redistribute weight across axles and stay legal.

Chassis Types and Sizes

20ft chassis

The shortest and lightest. Built for a single 20ft container, tandem axle, tare typically around 5,500 to 6,700 lb. Cheap to buy and easy to manoeuvre, but limited — it carries one size of box and nothing else.

The catch with 20ft chassis is weight distribution. A loaded 20ft container is short and dense, concentrating a lot of mass over a small span. Many 20ft chassis use a sliding axle group specifically so the driver can shift load off the drive axles and stay within the 34,000 lb tandem limit. If you are hauling heavy 20ft boxes routinely, the slider is not optional.

40ft standard chassis

The most common chassis in North America. Straight frame, tandem axle, tare around 6,500 to 8,000 lb, twist locks at the 40ft positions. It carries a 40ft standard container at a legal overall height without difficulty.

What it does not do well is carry a 9’6″ high cube. A standard chassis has a deck height around 48 to 50 inches. Add a 9’6″ container and you are at or just past 13’6″ — the height limit in most states, with 14’0″ permitted in many western states. That is a bridge-strike waiting to happen, and it is the reason the gooseneck chassis exists.

40ft gooseneck chassis

A gooseneck chassis has a raised, narrowed neck at the front that tucks up into the gooseneck tunnel — a recessed channel in the underside of every 40ft and 45ft container’s floor at the front end, roughly 4 feet long and about 5 inches deep. Because the container drops down over the neck rather than sitting on top of it, the whole load rides several inches lower.

Those few inches are the difference between legal and illegal for a high cube. If you are hauling 40ft high cube containers, a gooseneck chassis is the correct equipment, not a nice-to-have. Tare runs about 6,800 to 7,500 lb.

Note the corollary: a 20ft container has no gooseneck tunnel, so a 20ft box cannot sit properly on the neck section of a gooseneck chassis. Combination chassis handle this with twist lock positions set behind the neck.

Extendable / sliding chassis

An extendable chassis telescopes to carry more than one container length. Common configurations run 20–40ft, or 40ft out to 45, 48 and 53ft for domestic containers and longer loads. A pin or hydraulic lock holds the extension at each detent, with twist lock positions at each length.

This is the right buy for a mixed fleet or an operation that does not know what is coming next week. You give up something for the versatility: tare weight goes up to roughly 7,500 to 8,500 lb, purchase price is higher, and there is more to inspect and maintain. If you are hauling 45ft high cube containers at all, an extendable is generally the only practical option, since dedicated 45ft chassis are scarce.

Tri-axle chassis

Three axles instead of two. The point is not the container — a chassis with two axles handles a 40ft box fine structurally — the point is axle weight limits. Adding a third axle spreads the load and lets you legally carry more gross weight under the federal bridge formula.

Tri-axles are standard at ports for heavy import boxes and for anything approaching the container’s rated payload. Tare goes up to roughly 8,500 to 9,500 lb, and the extra axle costs you tyres, brakes and fuel. Buy one when you are consistently running heavy, not because heavier sounds safer.

Combination and multi-position chassis

A combo chassis carries a 20ft or a 40ft — sometimes two 20ft boxes — using multiple sets of twist lock positions along the frame. Popular with drayage operators who cannot predict their mix. Slightly heavier than a dedicated 40ft, and you must confirm the twist lock positions match the container you are loading before you back under it.

Chassis vs Flatbed vs Tilt Deck

This is the question most first-time container buyers are really asking, so here it is plainly.

Chassis

Lightest option, fastest securement, purpose-built. But a chassis has no way to load or unload itself. The container must be lifted on by a crane, reach stacker, side loader or a heavy forklift with sufficient capacity and fork length, and lifted off the same way at the destination. If you do not have that equipment at the delivery end, a chassis is the wrong tool no matter how good the price is.

Flatbed

A flatbed trailer will carry a container, secured with chains and binders rather than twist locks. It is versatile — the same trailer hauls lumber, steel and machinery on the return leg — but it still requires lifting equipment at both ends, it adds deck height (worse for high cubes), and load securement takes real time. Flatbeds make sense when the trailer needs to do other work, or when a crane is already on site.

Tilt deck

A tilt deck trailer tilts its bed to the ground so the container can be winched or slid off under control, with no lifting equipment at the destination. For delivering a container to a residential lot, a farm, a ranch or a job site, this is the standard method and usually the only practical one.

The trade-off is space. A tilt deck needs a long straight run to tilt and discharge: roughly 60 feet of clear approach plus about 12 feet of width for a 20ft container, and on the order of 100 feet for a 40ft. Overhead clearance matters too — no branches, no power lines, no low eaves. Assess this before ordering, not on delivery day.

Gooseneck and equipment trailers

For 8ft, 9ft and 10ft mini containers, a heavy-duty gooseneck trailer or equipment trailer behind a three-quarter-ton or one-ton pickup is often enough, given a forklift or tractor with forks to load. A loaded 20ft container is past what any pickup should be pulling — check the trailer’s GVWR against the container’s tare plus contents before assuming.

Weight: the Constraint Everyone Underestimates

Federal law caps gross combination weight on the Interstate System at 80,000 lb, with 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem, subject to the bridge formula (FHWA size and weight overview). Work backwards from there:

  • Tractor: 17,000–20,000 lb
  • 40ft gooseneck chassis: ~7,000 lb
  • Empty 40ft high cube container: ~8,860 lb
  • Remaining for cargo: roughly 44,000–47,000 lb

The container itself is rated for a 58,340 lb payload. You will be stopped long before you reach it. This gap between structural rating and legal road capacity catches out a lot of people planning their first heavy move. Tri-axle chassis and overweight permits exist precisely to close it, within limits.

Buying and Inspecting a Used Chassis

Chassis lead hard lives in port service. Before money changes hands, check:

  • Twist locks — all four rotate freely and latch. Seized or worn locks are the most common defect and the most safety-critical.
  • Frame rails — look for cracks at weld joints and around the bolsters, and for previous repairs. Surface rust on a chassis is universal; cracked welds are not acceptable.
  • Landing gear — cranks smoothly through full travel under its own gearbox, both legs, no bent tubes.
  • Brakes, air lines, slack adjusters, lights — the same items that will fail a DOT roadside inspection.
  • Tyres and wheel ends — port chassis often run mismatched tyres and neglected bearings.
  • Slider mechanism — on sliders and extendables, confirm it moves and that pins seat fully at every detent.

If the chassis will be offered for interchange in intermodal service, note that FMCSA’s intermodal equipment provider rules (49 CFR Part 390, Subpart C) impose systematic inspection, repair and maintenance obligations on whoever provides the equipment.
